Remembering Jhara Pahalwan: A Legend of Pakistani Wrestling

Muhammad Zubair Aslam, popularly known as Jhara Pahalwan, was a celebrated Pakistani wrestler who remained undefeated in his career. Born on 24 November 1960 in Lahore, Pakistan, Jhara became a national icon, earning titles such as Pride of Pakistan and Rustam-e-Pakistan.

Jhara’s wrestling journey began at the young age of 16. Standing at 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) and weighing 211 lb (96 kg), he quickly made his mark in the wrestling world. Trained by Aslam Pahalwan and Arshad Bijli, he debuted in 1979 and gained fame for defeating Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki in the fifth round—a wrestler who had previously defeated Jhara’s uncle, Aki wrestler. This victory not only cemented his legacy but also sparked a lasting friendship with Inoki.

Jhara’s illustrious career included significant victories, such as defeating Zawar Multani Pehlwan in Multan twice. His accolades include the esteemed titles of Fakhar-e-Pakistan and Rustam-e-Pakistan. Tragically, Jhara’s life was cut short when he passed away from heart failure on 10 September 1991, at the age of 30. He was laid to rest at Bholu Pahalwan Gymnasium in Lahore.

In 2015, Antonio Inoki honored Jhara’s legacy by taking Jhara’s nephew, Haroon Abid, under his guardianship in Japan, continuing the family’s wrestling tradition.
