Remembering Manzoor Hussain ‘Bholu’ Pahalwan

Let’s pay tribute to one of Pakistan’s wrestling legends, Bholu Pahalwan, who left an indelible mark on the sport. As the very first champion of newly independent Pakistan, Bholu, son of ‘Rustam-e-Hind’ Imam Bakhsh Pahalwan, embodied the spirit of strength and perseverance.
Before the nation’s birth, Bholu showcased his prowess by defeating renowned wrestlers like Mangal Singh. His victories extended beyond borders, triumphing over competitors from the West including Karl Pojello, Emil Koroshenko, and Baron von Heczey.
In 1949, he secured the prestigious ‘Rustam-e-Pakistan’ title, besting Younus Gujranwalia. His achievements were celebrated with the esteemed ‘Championship Mace’ by Khwaja Nazimuddin, Governor General of Pakistan.
Bholu’s legacy was further immortalized with the ‘Pride of Performance Award’ in 1962, presented by President Muhammad Ayub Khan. Recognized as ‘Rustam-e-Zaman’ (world champion) by the All Pakistan Wrestling Association, Bholu’s reign was solidified with his victory over Henri Pierlot (Les Thornton) to claim the 1967 world title in London.
His unparalleled leadership and unbeaten record earned him the title of ‘Rustam-e-Zaman’ for the second time in 1967. Bholu Pahalwan remains a symbol of excellence, inspiring generations of wrestlers and leaving an enduring legacy in the annals of Pakistani sports history. 🤼♂️🇵🇰
