Remembering and Honoring Munir Dar
Today, we pay tribute to one of the greatest Pakistani hockey players, Munir Dar, who excelled in the full-back position. Born Munir Ahmed Dar in Amritsar, India, on March 28, 1935, he left an indelible mark on the sport.
Munir was instrumental in Pakistan’s success at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games, where he played a key role in defeating India, helping Pakistan secure gold with a superior goal average. His defensive prowess continued to shine as Pakistan won gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympics and the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Pakistan Olympic Association inducted Munir Dar into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was posthumously awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Award of Excellence).
