Munawwar-uz-Zaman: A Legendary Pakistani Hockey Player

Munawwar-uz-Zaman was one of the greatest former Pakistani hockey players, known for his exceptional skills as a left full-back.

Born on July 2, 1951, Munawwar-uz-Zaman was renowned for his anticipation and recovery skills on the field. In 1980, he led Pakistan to a remarkable record of twenty-three consecutive wins.

One of his most memorable moments came during the 1971 Hockey World Cup, where he secured a crucial goal against India (2-1) in the semi-final on October 22, 1971. Throughout his career, he won multiple gold medals, including two World Cups (1971 Barcelona, 1978 Buenos Aires) and two Asian Games (1974 Tehran, 1978 Bangkok).

Sadly, Munawwar-uz-Zaman passed away suddenly at the age of forty-three due to cardiac arrest on July 28, 1994, in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.

In recognition of his significant contributions to Pakistani hockey, he was honored posthumously with the Pride of Performance Award in 1980. Munawwar-uz-Zaman’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of hockey players in Pakistan.
