Born in Jhand, Chakwal district in 1933, Subedar Abdul Khaliq-flying bird is a name that shines brightly in the annals of Pakistani sports history. This incredible sprinter put Pakistan on the international athletics map with his phenomenal speed and determination.
In the 1954 Asian Games in Manila, Khaliq-flying bird blazed through the 100 meters event, clocking in at 10.6 seconds and breaking the previous record. His stellar performance also led Pakistan to a silver medal in the 4×100 meters relay. It was here that Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru famously dubbed him “The Flying Bird of Asia.”
Khaliq’s prowess continued to shine in the 1956 Indo-Pak athletics meet in Delhi, where he set new Asian records in both the 100 meters (10.4 seconds) and 200 meters (21.4 seconds). At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, he reached the semi-finals in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, narrowly missing out on the finals.
In the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, Khaliq retained his 100 meters crown and won silver in the 200 meters, narrowly edged out by Milkha Singh of India. He also anchored Pakistan to a bronze medal in the 4×100 meters relay.
Throughout his career, Khaliq represented Pakistan in numerous international events, amassing a total of 63 medals, including 36 golds. His dedication and achievements are a testament to his extraordinary talent and perseverance.
Even during the 1971 war, when he was taken as a prisoner of war in India, Khaliq’s spirit remained unbroken. The Indian government offered to release him in recognition of his athletic achievements, but he refused any preferential treatment, standing tall as a true hero.
