Anwar Ahmed Khan, an exceptional former centre half, is among the 25 Famous Pakistani Hockey Players celebrated for their contributions to the field. Born Anwar Ahmed β€˜Anu’ Khan on September 24, 1933, in Bhopal, India, Anwar made a remarkable impact on the sport.

Known as the “Rock of Gibraltar,” Anwar’s brilliance shone when Pakistan clinched gold at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games. His strategic prowess was crucial in Pakistan’s historic victory over India in the 1960 Olympics final.

Anwar’s performance was stellar throughout the 1960 Olympics, including scoring a goal in Pakistan’s 10-0 win against Japan during their Group B encounter. His defensive strength was again pivotal at the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games, where Pakistan triumphed over India 2-0, securing gold at the Senayan Hockey Stadium on September 3, 1962.

After retiring from playing, Anwar served as the manager and coach for Pakistan hockey, earning the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Award of Excellence) for his contributions. Anwar Ahmed Khan passed away on May 2, 2014, in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport.
