Anwar Ahmed Khan: The Rock of Gibraltar in Pakistani Hockey

Anwar Ahmed Khan, known as the “Rock of Gibraltar,” was an exceptional former centre half for Pakistan. Born as Anwar Ahmed β€˜Anu’ Khan in Bhopal, India, on September 24, 1933, he became a legendary figure in hockey.

He shone brilliantly when Pakistan secured gold at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games. Anwar played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s historic victory over India in the 1960 Olympics final, scoring a goal in their 10-0 win against Japan during the Group B encounter.

Anwar’s defensive prowess was on full display at the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games, where he helped Pakistan triumph over India 2-0, securing gold on September 3, 1962, at the Senayan Hockey Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.

After retiring, Anwar dedicated himself to the sport as Pakistan’s hockey manager and coach. His contributions were recognized with the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Award of Excellence).

Anwar Ahmed Khan passed away on May 2, 2014, in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication in the world of hockey.
