Akhtar Rasool: Celebrating a Legendary Career in Pakistani Hockey

Akhtar Rasool, one of Pakistan’s most esteemed hockey players, was born on January 13, 1954, in Faisalabad, Punjab. Renowned for his exceptional ball distribution skills, Akhtar first made his mark when Pakistan won the inaugural Hockey World Cup in 1971.

Throughout his illustrious career, Akhtar amassed numerous accolades, including gold medals at two Asian Games (1974 in Tehran and 1978 in Bangkok) and two additional Hockey World Cups (1978 in Buenos Aires and 1982 in Mumbai).

He captained the Pakistani team to victory in the 1982 World Cup, where they triumphed over West Germany 3-1 in the final at Mahindra Hockey Stadium on January 12, 1982. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Akhtar was awarded the Pride of Performance in 1983.

After retiring as a player, Akhtar continued to serve the sport as the President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), leaving an enduring legacy in Pakistani hockey.
