Shahbaz Ahmed, famously known as the ‘Maradona of Hockey,’ is one of Pakistan’s most iconic former hockey players. Born on September 1, 1968, in Faisalabad, Punjab, Shahbaz Ahmed Senior played a pivotal role in many of Pakistan’s victories during the modern era of hockey.

As an inside left forward, Shahbaz’s skill and leadership led Pakistan to numerous triumphs. He was instrumental in the Asia Cup team’s gold medal win against India, scoring the first goal in the 2-0 victory on December 28, 1999, in New Delhi.

Shahbaz’s success continued with the 1994 Lahore Champions Trophy, where he scored twice, including once in the final, to help Pakistan secure gold. Later that year, he captained Pakistan to their fourth Hockey World Cup title in Sydney, defeating Germany 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. His performance earned him the title of ‘Best Player’ of the competition.

Reflecting on this momentous achievement, Shahbaz told The Express Tribune, “It was the greatest rush of emotion and pride.”

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to field hockey, Shahbaz was awarded the 1992 Pride of Performance Award and was also honored with the Hilal-i-Pakistan (Crescent of Pakistan).
